Welcome to Ms. Horack’s 5th Grade Class!
Welcome to a new school year and a new way of learning! Even though we are learning virtually, I promise that I will do my best to help your family establish a schedule and routine in order to help your child reach their goals. Normally, the first few weeks are a “get to know you” stage in class. We would do many collaborative assignments so that the students can practice working with one another and so that I can identify your child’s specific needs and strengths. Even though school is not happening on campus, I am still going to meet daily with your child to get to know them so that I am able to still identify needs and
strengths and provide them with instruction that will be most beneficial for them.
In order to be successful with Distance Learning, a firm foundation of trust, discipline, structure, and routine must be established. To do this, I plan on spending the first few days of instruction on providing your child with whole class Zoom conferences to get to know me, explore their new learning platform
Canvas, get to know their classmates, and doing small activities that will allow me to get to know them and their personalities, as well as give them a better understanding on how to submit assignments on Canvas.
Once our foundation is set, we will begin instruction. I will hold Zoom calls throughout the morning to check-in, teach math, and teach ELA. These Zoom sessions will be recorded and placed in Canvas so that students that are unable to attend or have access problems can view the lesson on their own. The recordings will also be beneficial to students who need to move at a bit of a slower pace or need the directions repeated.
I look forward to an exciting year with your child. This letter will go over the general school schedule, expectations, and some basic procedures for the start of the year.
Classroom activities begin at 8:30am, so please make sure your student is prepared on Zoom on time. Brain and screen breaks will be given throughout lessons/time blocks to ensure that time on Canvas is beneficial.

Communication IS KEY!
I believe parent involvement is essential in a student’s education. I believe children receive the best education possible when parents and teachers work together as a team. This year, this is even more important as we will need to work as a team to ensure your child is successful in 5th grade. I will be
communicating this year mostly through Remind App, e-mails, and phone calls. Canvas will also be a great source for you to see feedback I have given on assignments as well as keeping up with your child’s progress.
Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns. You can reach me through Remind, e-mails, or by phone. (Please note that Remind is the quickest way to get a hold of me). My e-mail address is firstname.lastname@example.org and the school phone number is 661-387-7020.
This year is definitely going to be different, but if we all work together, it’ll be great. I truly would like to say thank you for all of your support and I am really looking forward to getting to know you and your child this year.
